The RAM Trucks have made a name for themselves in the US market. Known for their incredible strength, capability, and durability, these trucks have become a favorite among American families and truck enthusiasts. But have you ever wondered how the RAM Trucks you see driving around Victor, NY, came to be? Victor Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram will tell you how RAM Trucks have evolved over the years, from military workhorses to the stylish, tech-packed trucks they are today.
The origin of the RAM brand can be traced back to the Dodge Brothers Company. In 1914, the company started producing trucks that were used by the US military during World War I. These trucks became popular among civilians after the war due to their strength and durability. In 1981, Dodge rebranded their truck line from the Dodge D series to Dodge RAM Trucks. However, RAM became an independent brand in 2009 after separating from Dodge. Today, RAM Trucks are manufactured by Stellantis.
1st Generation (1981-1993)
Dodge’s first trucks with the RAM brand were produced in 1981. They had a bold front grille, rectangular headlights, and a boxy shape like other trucks of the time. These trucks came in different cab sizes and models. The half-ton haulers were known as the Dodge RAM 150, the three-quarter-ton models were named the Dodge RAM 250, and the one-ton trucks were called the Dodge RAM 350. Initially, Dodge offered three different engines on the first-generation trucks, including a 95-horsepower 3.7L slant six, 140-horsepower 5.2L V8, and a 5.9L V8 engine with 170-horsepower. A 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine was later introduced.
2nd Generation (1994-2002)
RAM Trucks got a makeover in its second generation. The boxy shape was replaced with a more aerodynamic body, giving the trucks a modern and sleek appearance. The front grille was also redesigned with a unique crosshair pattern, which would become a signature feature of the brand. Inside, the cabins were upgraded with new amenities and features. The naming also changed. The half-ton models are now called the Dodge RAM 1500, the three-quarter-ton models became the Dodge RAM 2500, and the one-ton models were known as the Dodge RAM 3500.
3rd Generation (2002-2008)
The third-generation Dodge RAM Trucks were a clear upgrade from the previous models. They got a fresh look with a more prominent grille and a more rounded, aerodynamic body. Inside, the trucks were upgraded with top-notch materials, modern tech, and advanced safety features. A new rear suspension was introduced for better handling and ride quality. Dodge also expanded their engine lineup, adding powerful options like the 5.7-liter HEMI V8.
4th Generation (2009-2018)
RAM Trucks were redesigned entirely in the fourth generation. They featured a more prominent front grille and new headlights, giving the trucks a modern and aggressive look. The cabins were revamped with higher-quality materials and advanced safety and technology features. The Dodge name was removed from the trucks after the two brands separated in 2009.
5th Generation (2019 – now)
The fifth generation brought many changes to RAM Trucks. The exterior was redesigned to look more modern and sleek. Inside, the trucks got more upscale materials and comfort features, improving the driving experience. A large infotainment system and premium audio options also became available. An air suspension was introduced for better handling and ride quality. The fifth-generation RAM Trucks also offered many new engines that were not available on their predecessors.
